State labor department to continue DUA services in McDuffie County
ATLANTA State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond announced today that the Georgia Department of Labor will continue to provide Disaster Unemployment Assistance (DUA) services in McDuffie County for people out of work because of the tornadoes that struck Georgia on March 1-2.
Commissioner Thurmond emphasized that McDuffie County workers and employers who lost their jobs or businesses because of the tornadoes may apply for DUA services at the department's Thomson Career Center at 232 Main St., Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Applications for these services should be filed no later than April 7, 2007.
Two forms of unemployment insurance assistance are available to claimants, including DUA and Georgia's regular unemployment insurance. DUA is a federal program that differs from state unemployment insurance in that it provides benefits to self-employed business people, farmers, diversified farming operators, loggers, commission-paid employees and others who are not eligible for the state's program.
In applying for benefits, applicants will need to provide their social security number. Because verification of income may be required, applicants are strongly urged to bring proof of earnings for the most recently completed tax year. Examples of acceptable documents include: copies of their most recently completed income tax returns, copies of quarterly estimated income tax payment records, or similar documents. The maximum weekly benefit amount is $320.
In addition to unemployment insurance, the Georgia Department of Labor provides job placement and training services.
Five other Georgia counties have also been declared federal disaster areas. They include Baker, Crawford, Mitchell, Sumter and Taylor.
