State labor department to transfer DUA services to Americus Career Center Monday
ATLANTA State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond announced today that the Georgia Department of Labor on Monday, March 19, will transfer all Disaster Unemployment Assistance (DUA) services from South Georgia Technical College to the labor department's Americus Career Center at 120 West Church St. in Americus. The career center's telephone number is (229) 931-2520.
After severe storms and tornadoes struck the state March 1-2, the labor department opened a temporary disaster relief unemployment insurance claims center on the campus of South Georgia Technical College to serve the Taylor and Sumter county area. The temporary claims center will close at the end of the day Friday, March 16.
Commissioner Thurmond emphasized that workers and employers in Sumter and Taylor counties who lost their jobs or businesses may apply for DUA services at the Americus Career Center Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Applications for these services should be filed no later than April 7, 2007.
Two forms of unemployment insurance assistance are available to claimants, including DUA and Georgia's regular unemployment insurance. DUA is a federal program that differs from state unemployment insurance in that it provides benefits to self-employed business people, farmers, diversified farming operators, loggers, commission-paid employees and others who are not eligible for the state's program.
In applying for benefits, applicants will need to provide their social security number. Because verification of income may be required, applicants are strongly urged to bring proof of earnings for the most recently completed tax year. Examples of acceptable documents include: copies of their most recently completed income tax returns, copies of quarterly estimated income tax payment records, or similar documents. The maximum weekly benefit amount is $320.
In addition to unemployment insurance, the Georgia Department of Labor provides job placement and training services.
In addition to Sumter and Taylor, four other Georgia counties have been declared federal disaster areas. They include Baker, Crawford, McDuffie, and Mitchell.
