Georgia's initial unemployment insurance claims rise in November
ATLANTA The Georgia Department of Labor announced today that 48,150 laid-off workers filed first-time claims for unemployment insurance benefits in November, up 16 percent from October. The increase is due primarily to seasonal layoffs in the manufacturing industries.
The number of initial claims filed in November is up 1.4 percent from November of 2006, when 47,487 were filed.
The 14 metro areas of the state and the changes in their initial claims from October to November of 2007 are as follows:
Albany, up 30, or 4.3 percent, from 700 to 730. Athens, up 153, or 28.8 percent, from 532 to 685. Atlanta, up 588, or 3.4 percent, from 17,044 to 17,632. Augusta, down 366, or 18.2 percent, from 2,016 to 1,650. Brunswick, up 121, or 40.7 percent, from 297 to 418. Columbus, down 169, or 17.4 percent, from 969 to 800. Dalton, up 604, or 36.8 percent, from 1,642 to 2,246. Gainesville, up 70, or 12.5 percent, from 558 to 628. Hinesville, down 28, or 14.4 percent, from 194 to 166. Macon, down 252, or 18.7 percent, from 1,347 to 1,095. Rome, up 135, or 22.5 percent, from 599 to 734. Savannah, up 96, or 11.1 percent, from 866 to 962. Valdosta, up 331, or 57.5 percent, from 576 to 907. Warner Robins, down 307, or 48 percent, from 639 to 332.
