Savannah to host ninth annual Georgia Workforce Conference

ATLANTA The Georgia Department of Labor announced today that the 2007 Georgia Workforce Conference will be held in Savannah, Wednesday through Friday, Dec. 5-7, at the Savannah International Trade and Convention Center. Approximately 1,300 workforce and business professionals from throughout the state are expected to attend.

"This conference will focus on the importance of building and maintaining stronger relationships with employers to create greater career opportunities for all Georgians," said State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond. "Information provided by employers on the skills and knowledge needed in today's workplace is critical to the success of the state's workforce development system. Our conference will bring employers together with workforce professionals to discuss their needs and strategies to meet them."

The conference's opening session will be Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. It will feature Roger Tutterow, Ph.D., professor of Economics at Mercer University's Eugene W. Stetson School of Business and Economics, who will make a presentation entitled, "Economic Growth and Labor Markets: A Regional Perspective." Sonny Dixon, news anchor at WTOC-TV, Savannah, will speak during a general session Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.

"Strengthening Private Sector Partnerships" will be the focus of a general session panel discussion Thursday at 12:30 p.m. It will feature Jonathan Martin, vice chair, Georgia Employer Committee's state board; Mark Musick, chair, Georgia Workforce Investment Board; C.B. Rathburn, Ph.D., president, Savannah Technical College, and Commissioner Thurmond.

The general session Friday at 10:30 a.m. will be a panel discussion on "New Visions for the New South: Partnerships for Success." Participants will be Ted Halley, executive director, South Carolina Employment Security Commission; Matthew Hughes, Ph.D., director, Workforce Development, State of Alabama; and Harry Payne Jr., chairman, Employment Security Commission of North Carolina, and Commissioner Thurmond.

Throughout the conference, a number of workshops will be conducted. They will address a wide variety of topics, including those affecting special workforce populations, such as youth, older workers, ex-offenders, welfare recipients, people with disabilities, and those needing training and other assistance.

Commissioner Thurmond initiated the Georgia Workforce Conference in 1999. Previously, it has been held in Atlanta, Savannah, Athens, Macon, Columbus, and Albany. Additional information about the Georgia Workforce Conference is available at the labor department web page www.dol.state.ga.us.
