Georgia Youth Workforce Conference to be held in Savannah
ATLANTA State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond announced today that the Georgia Department of Labor's third annual Youth Workforce Conference will be held Tuesday, Dec. 4, from 9 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. at the Savannah International Convention and Trade Center. The event is being held in conjunction with the labor department's annual Georgia Workforce Conference, which will be held at the same site Wednesday through Friday, Dec. 5-7.
"The youth of today are the workforce of tomorrow and it's important that they make wise decisions in choosing and preparing for their careers," said Commissioner Thurmond. "Our Youth Workforce Conference will help them with this process by focusing on the importance of education and helping the students better understand the variety of careers open to them and the assistance available to help them successfully transition from the classroom to the workplace."
The theme of the youth conference is, "Are You Ready for Success?" About 1,500 students from throughout Georgia are expected to attend. Among them will be students participating in the department's Jobs for Georgia Graduates (JGG) and High School/High Tech (HS/HT) programs. JGG is the highly-successful school-to-work transition program, while HS/HT offers high school students with disabilities significant exposure to careers in science and technology.
At 10:45 a.m., Eddie Slowikowski will deliver the keynote address. Slowikowski is one of 300 Americans who has run the mile in under four minutes and the first person inducted into the Loyola University Athletic Hall of Fame in Chicago. His offering is an inspirational actionpacked multimedia presentation, entitled "It's Up to You," which includes audience participation.
There will be an interactive session at 9:45 a.m. that teaches students the value of making positive choices that will impact success in school, work, and families. That will be followed at 10:15 a.m. by a presentation entitled, "Choices vs. Voices," that will help students better understand that they have the power to make career decisions and should strive to make the right ones.
Following a noon luncheon, Kim Gusby, news anchor for WSAV-TV3 in Savannah, will emcee a session on how to dress for success in the workplace. Next, there will be an interactive session designed to teach the students interviewing skills, resume writing, and business etiquette in the workplace.
Stephanie Edwards, a student at Armstrong State University in Savannah and a recent contestant on the American Idol television show, will sing during the opening session at 9:30 a.m.
