Open house ceremony for Georgia Department of Labor's Athens Career Center to be held Thursday
ATLANTA State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond said today that an official open house ceremony for the Georgia Department of Labor's new One-Stop Athens Career Center has been scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 11, from 2-4 p.m. The new facility, which has been operational since June 29, is located at 150 Evelyn C. Neely Dr.
During the event, dedication ceremonies will also be held for Evelyn C. Neely Drive, named in honor of the long time community activist who has a special interest in issues related to child care.
"To have a one-stop facility of this magnitude in Athens has been a dream of mine for many years," said Commissioner Thurmond. "We're pleased to be able to provide a state-of-the-art facility for all of our employers, job seekers, and vocational rehabilitation customers. This new career center is the most accessible government facility for persons with disabilities in Georgia, and it is setting the standard for other new career centers to follow.
"I invite all Athenians to attend the open house, so that they can see first-hand what a fine facility we have to help with their employment needs," Commissioner Thurmond continued.
The 36,000 square-foot facility provides employment-related services for employers and job seekers, including job listings, job search workshops, unemployment insurance, labor market information, and a resource library, along with computers, printers, and fax machines.
The new facility provides user-friendly access to vocational rehabilitation customers, as well. It has a low service window to accommodate customers in wheelchairs and computer stations to aid those with impaired vision or blindness. It also has a business center for employers and several training areas for job seekers. A "clothes closet" filled with donated clothes for those who don't have proper clothing to wear to job interviews is also available at the career center.
The new career center provides accommodations for an unemployment insurance tax office, as well as representatives from the Council on Aging, Job Corps, Veterans Administration, and the state Forestry Service. Nearby are the Athens-Clarke County Department of Family and Children's Services and the Northeast Georgia Center for Mental Health/Mental Retardation/Drug-Alcohol Abuse Services.
The new Athens Career Center's regular hours of operation are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The office telephone number is (706) 583-2550.
