Georgia Department of Labor will help laid-off workers at Thomasville Home Furnishings

ATLANTA State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond said today that the Georgia Department of Labor will provide assistance to employees who lose their jobs at Thomasville Home Furnishings in Thomasville. The company, which manufactures bedspreads and draperies, has told the labor department that 87 employees are being laid off and that the plant will close.

A company spokesman has confirmed to the labor department that 68 employees were laid off last Friday and the remaining 19 will be laid off tomorrow.

"The closure of Thomasville Home Furnishings is creating a difficult situation for the workers and the community," said Commissioner Thurmond, "and I want the workers and their families to know they're not alone in dealing with this situation. Our staff will work closely with the employees, company officials, as well as Southwest Georgia Technical College and our Workforce Investment Board partners, and local business and political leaders to determine how we can best assist the employees affected by the plant closure."

Staff from the labor department's Thomasville Career Center have met with the company management to explain the services available to the employees. On Tuesday, Oct. 30, the department will conduct an orientation session for the employees and help them file claims for unemployment insurance. The orientation session will be at 10 a.m. at the Thomasville Career Center at 403 North Broad St. in Thomasville.

Thurmond said the labor department's rapid response unit will work with company management to discuss a wide range of transitional services available to laid-off workers. These options include: employee information sessions, unemployment compensation, job-search services, retraining options, resources of the labor department's career centers, surveys of workers to determine needs, special workshops on career options and resume writing and interviewing skills.

The Georgia Department of Labor conducts job search workshops, career counseling, and provides resource centers in each office. Some job seekers may also be eligible for occupational/skills training, on-the-job training, General Education Development (GED) preparation and testing, and supportive services such as child-care assistance, transportation assistance and meals while enrolled in full-time training.

The Thomas County area is served by the Georgia Department of Labor's Thomasville Career Center at 403 North Broad St. in Thomasville. The telephone number is (229) 225-4033.
