Georgia Department of Labor to help Columbus area employers recruit workers
ATLANTA The Georgia Department of Labor will host recruitments next week at its Columbus Career Center at 700 Veterans Parkway to help local employers fill about 200 job openings.
The first recruitment will be held Monday, Oct. 29, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. for the Army and Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES). The company is trying to fill about 90 job openings at a new PX Mall food court at Fort Benning. The new PX Mall, which is scheduled to open in November, will be located in Building 9220 on Marne Road.
Applicants for the AAFES jobs must be at least 18 years old and have a high school diploma or a General Education Development (GED) certificate. The company will have representatives available at the career center to interview job applicants and assist them with on-line applications at www.aafes.com. AAFES will be hiring customer service tellers, cashier checkers, sales and other associates, and food service workers. The company will conduct a criminal background check on all applicants.
The second recruitment will be held Tuesday, Oct. 30, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. for Steve and Barry's, a new retail clothing store that will be opening in November at 3201 Macon Rd., Suite 201 at Cross Country Plaza. The company is trying to fill about 100 job openings for cashiers and sales associates. Aptitude tests will be given to those who apply for the cashier positions.
Applicants for the retail clothing jobs must complete a generic application. While the company may hire minors under the age of 18, the applicants will need a valid work permit. The company will conduct a drug screening test. If applicants meet the company's criteria, they will be scheduled for interviews.
On Wednesday, Oct. 31, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., the career center will host informational sessions for the U. S. Border Patrol. The federal agency is trying to hire 4,000 border patrol agents from around the country to help protect the southwest border of the United States. The sessions will last about 30 minutes each.
Recruiters will answer questions and provide instructions on the application process. To be a border patrol agent, an applicant must be a U.S. citizen who is less than 40 years old, have a valid state driver's license, able to pass a background investigation, a drug test, and a medical and fitness examination.
