Georgia's unemployment rate increases in September

ATLANTA The Georgia Department of Labor reported today that the state's unemployment rate rose to 4.6 percent in August, up one-tenth of one percent from 4.5 percent in July. The state's rate was one-tenth of one percent higher than the U.S. unadjusted rate of 4.5 percent in September.

The state's rate rose in September because 6,048 more jobless residents were added to the unemployment rolls, while 23,182 more job seekers entered the workforce.

From August to September, preliminary data show Georgia lost 800 payroll jobs. The 14 metro
areas of the state and their job changes include:
Albany, up 400, or six-tenths of one percent, from 65,500 to 65,900. Athens, up 400, or one-half of one percent, from 83,300 to 83,700. Atlanta, up 4,900, or two-tenths of one percent, from 2,460,800 to 2,465,700. Augusta, down 100, from 215,000 to 214,900. Brunswick, down 700, or 1.5 percent, from 46,300 to 45,600. Columbus, down 400, or three-tenths of one percent, from 123,400 to 123,000. Dalton, down 400, or one-half of one percent, from 80,500 to 80,100. Gainesville, up 400, or one-half of one percent, from 76,000 to 76,400. Hinesville, down 100, or one-half of one percent, from 19,000 to 18,900. Macon, up 200, or two-tenths of one percent, from 101,300 to 101,500. Rome, down 100, or two-tenths of one percent, from 44,900 to 44,800. Savannah, up 100, or one-tenth of one percent, from 161,300 to 161,400. Valdosta, up 300, or one-half of one percent, from 56,200 to 56,500. Warner Robins, up 300, or one-half of one percent, from 58,800 to 59,100.
