Commissioner Thurmond to speak at open house ceremony for Construction Trades Program in Hancock County
ATLANTA State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond will be the principal speaker at the official open house ceremony for Sandersville Technical College's (STC) new Construction Trades Program in Hancock County. The event is set for Wednesday, Oct. 4, at 2 p.m. at the college's Hancock County Center, 10571 Highway 15 in Sparta.
Other open house ceremony participants include: Brenda Warren, director of the Hancock County Center, who will welcome the guests and provide the invocation; the Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) students at Hancock Central High School, who will lead in the Pledge of Allegiance; Dr. Lloyd Horadan, president of STC, who will introduce Commissioner Thurmond; and David Earl, the instructor of the program, who will take the guests on a guided tour of the center.
Commissioner Thurmond provided a Georgia Department of Labor grant to fund the program. The program emphasizes practical application for successful employment in residential construction. Completion of the program leads to a certificate in one of three building trades: electrician's assistant, carpenter's assistant, or basic plumbing. A full-time student can usually complete the program in four quarters.
During the summer quarter, the program's first 15 students enrolled in the carpenter's assistant class, which requires 19 credit hours to obtain a certificate. This class will continue into the fall quarter with the students already enrolled, and additional students will be admitted. Then, plans are underway to offer the electrician's assistant class during the winter quarter and then follow that up with the basic plumbing class. The electrician's assistant class requires 17 credit hours, while the basic plumbing class requires 19. The program provides safe educational facilities which support effective learning through standard curriculum, instructional materials and equipment. It is designed to promote a desire for learning, so individuals will focus on opportunities for life-long learning as a means for enhancing their opportunities for long-term employment. To enroll in the program, a student must be 16 years of age or older and meet admission standards of STC.
