Georgia's initial unemployment insurance claims decline in August
ATLANTA - The Georgia Department of Labor announced today that 33,852 laid-off workers filed first-time claims for unemployment insurance benefits in August, down 23 percent from July. The claims went down in August after a seasonal high of 44,027 in July.
Initial claims were also down from 35,634 filed in August 2005 for an over-the-year decrease of five percent. Initial claims are considered to be a leading economic indicator, because they measure newly laid-off workers.
The 14 metro areas of the state and the changes in their initial claims from July to August are as follows:
Albany, down 960, or 56 percent, from 1,700 to 740. Athens, down 38, or 7.6 percent, from 500 to 462. Atlanta, down 1,946, or 12 percent, from 16,483 to 14,537. Augusta, down 440, or 24 percent, from 1,800 to 1,360. Brunswick, up 66, or 24 percent, from 273 to 339. Columbus, up 506, or 39 percent, from 1,301 to 1,807. Dalton, down 722, or 50 percent, from 1,430 to 708. Gainesville, down 49, or 10 percent, from 478 to 429. Hinesville, down 66, or 26 percent, from 253 to 187. Macon, down 111, or 11 percent, from 1,048 to 937. Rome, down 335, or 46 percent, from 730 to 395. Savannah, up 51, or six percent, from 866 to 917. Valdosta, down 18, or 3.5 percent, from 513 to 495. Warner Robins, up two, or six-tenths percent, from 325 to 327.
