Thurmond vows to help laid-off workers at Swift Denim in Columbus
ATLANTA State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond said today that the Georgia Department of Labor will provide assistance to employees expected to lose their jobs with Swift Denim in Georgia.
Officials of Swift Denim have told the labor department that the company plans to close its current facility at 6801 Flat Rock Rd. in Columbus. The company anticipates a loss of about 500 jobs. The closings are expected to take place in the coming months.
"The layoffs at Swift Denim will not only create difficult situations for the workers and their families, but also will have an economic impact on the Columbus area," said Commissioner Thurmond. "I want the people of Swift Denim to know that they are not alone in dealing with the problem. We are prepared to assist them."
Staff from the labor department's rapid response unit have talked with company management and will meet with them next week to discuss a wide range of services available to the laid-off workers. These options include: on-site employee information sessions, unemployment compensation, job-search services, retraining options, resources of the labor department's career centers, surveys of workers to determine needs, special workshops on career options and resume writing and interviewing skills.
The Georgia Department of Labor conducts job search workshops, career counseling, and provides resource centers in each office. Some job seekers may also be eligible for occupational/skills training, on-the-job training, General Education Development (GED) preparation and testing, and supportive services such as child-care assistance, transportation assistance and meals while enrolled in full-time training.
The Columbus area is served the Georgia Department of Labor's Columbus Career Center at 700 Veterans Parkway. The telephone number is (706) 649-7423. However, effected workers may get assistance from any of the department's 53 career centers statewide.
