Metro Albany's unemployment rate rises in July

ATLANTA -- The Georgia Department of Labor reported today that the unemployment rate in the metro Albany area rose to 6.2 percent in July, up one-tenth of one percent from 6.1 percent in June. The area's jobless rate was 6.4 percent in July of 2005.

Meanwhile, the state's unemployment rate declined to 5.1 percent in July, down one-tenth of one percent from 5.2 percent in June. However, for the third consecutive month, the Georgia jobless rate was higher than the U. S. rate, which was an unadjusted 5.0 percent in July.

While unemployment declined slightly in the state in July, Georgia lost 16,700 non-farm jobs, with the bulk of those among seasonal workers in local education, as schools closed for the summer.
