Metro Dalton's unemployment rate rises in June

ATLANTA -- The Georgia Department of Labor reported today that the unemployment rate in the metro Dalton area rose to 4.9 percent in June, up four-tenths of one percent from 4.5 percent in May. The area's jobless rate was 5.1 percent in June of 2005.

Meanwhile, the state's unemployment rate rose to 5.2 percent in June, up one-half of one percent from 4.7 percent in May. The jobless rate rose because of a seasonal influx of students into the workforce looking for temporary summer jobs and recent graduates seeking permanent employment.

For the second consecutive month, job growth did not keep pace with the number of unemployed workers actively seeking jobs. Unemployment among active job seekers rose by 22,879 during June, while the number of people employed decreased by 198. Another 22,681 entered the workforce, but were unable to find jobs. At the same time, Georgia lost 9,800 non-farm jobs, which includes multiple job holders. Virtually all of the job losses came in the service-related industries. Jobs in manufacturing and construction were up slightly.
