Georgia Mountains' unemployment rate rises in May

ATLANTA -- The Georgia Department of Labor reported today that the unemployment rate in the Georgia Mountains area rose to 3.8 percent in May, up one-half of one percent from 3.3 percent in April. The area's jobless rate was 4.3 percent in May of 2005.

Meanwhile, Georgia's unemployment rate rose to 4.7 percent in May, up four-tenths of one percent from 4.3 percent in April. The jobless rate rose because job growth in May did not keep pace with the number of unemployed workers actively seeking jobs.

Unemployment among active job seekers rose by 21,093 during May, while the number of people employed decreased by 14,988. Another 6,105 entered the workforce, but were unable to find jobs. At the same time, Georgia added only 15,600 non-farm jobs, which includes multiple job holders. Most of the jobs gained were in trade and services. There was also a slight increase in construction and manufacturing jobs.
