Georgia's initial unemployment insurance claims rise in October
ATLANTA - The Georgia Department of Labor announced today that 39,456 laid-off workers filed first-time claims for unemployment insurance benefits in October, up 29 percent from September. Initial claims were also up from 36,252 filed in October 2005 for an over-the-year increase of 8.8 percent.
Most of the increase in claims over the month and year came in manufacturing industries, as a number of plants closed their doors and laid-off workers. Initial claims are considered to be a leading economic indicator, because they measure newly laid-off workers.
The 14 metro areas of the state and the changes in their initial claims from September to October are as follows:
Albany, up 152, or 29 percent, from 532 to 684. Athens, up 14, or three percent, from 467 to 481. Atlanta, up 1,407, or 11 percent, from 12,885 to 14,292. Augusta, up 366, or 33 percent, from 1,113 to 1,479. Brunswick, unchanged at 295. Columbus, up 38, or four percent, from 935 to 973. Dalton, up 723, or 44 percent, from 1,629 to 2,352. Gainesville, up 56, or 15 percent, from 364 to 420. Hinesville, up 101, or 59 percent, from 171 to 272. Macon, up 131, or 17 percent, from 792 to 923. Rome, down 124, or 15 percent, from 816 to 692.
