Starbucks of Tifton receives Georgia Workforce/Touch the Future-Transition Conference Employer Award

ATLANTA State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond said that the Starbucks store in Tifton has received an employer award for its commitment to recruiting, training, hiring, and promoting people with disabilities. The award was presented at the Georgia Workforce and Touch the Future-Transition Conference at the Athens Classic Center.

The Starbucks store in Tifton was nominated for the employer award by members of the disability community, workforce professionals, teachers, and vocational rehabilitation counselors. The company has a strong commitment to partnering with the disability community and acting as an agent of positive change for the employment of people with disabilities.

Starbucks has created a culture of diversity in Tift County that honors individuality. And, Ms. Megan Rousey, manager of the Tifton store, has gone the extra mile to provide work opportunities for students with disabilities. Ms. Rousey is involved with local Vocational Rehabilitation agencies. The manager not only places students with disabilities on jobs, but she also mentors them while they are on the job.

For example, Ms. Rousey hired a Tift County High School student who had a severe auditory processing disorder. Accommodations were made on each shift so the student's duties flowed naturally and smoothly and no other employee felt put upon. Also, the accommodations were implemented so quietly and naturally, there was no embarrassing attention directed at the student. In fact, those accommodations were so smooth and the student so successful on the job that although he has gone on to college, his job is held for him whenever he comes home for long weekends or vacations.

In addition to employing individual students, the Starbucks store in Tifton has become a corporate sponsor of the Georgia High School/High Tech Youth Leadership Forum/College Preparatory Experience. And, the store and Ms. Rousey supported a project called Dare to Soar, a transition project designed to help students make informed post-secondary choices.
