Kroger of Suwanee receives Georgia Workforce/Touch the Future-Transition Conference Employer Award
ATLANTA State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond said that a Kroger store in Gwinnett County has received an employer award for its commitment to recruiting, training, hiring, and promoting people with disabilities. The award was presented at the Georgia Workforce and Touch the Future-Transition Conference at the Athens Classic Center.
The Kroger store, located at 2121 Lawrenceville-Suwanee Rd. in Suwanee, was nominated for the employer award by members of the disability community, workforce professionals, teachers, and vocational rehabilitation counselors. The company has a strong commitment to partnering with the disability community and acting as an agent of positive change for the employment of people with disabilities.
The store's manager, Ms. Patti Armstrong, is a member of the Gwinnett County Interagency Transition Council, a group formed to aid a successful transition of students with disabilities from high school to work. A goal of Ms. Armstrong and the council is to change the business community's attitude toward hiring people with disabilities.
And, partnering with local schools' Community Based Vocational Training programs, Ms. Armstrong has made the Kroger store a place where special education students get the opportunity to learn job skills on the job.
Ms. Armstrong routinely hires students as part-time employees through high schools' Adapted Work Study Program. She not only hires the students, she pays close attention to their behavior, work ethics and performance on the job. She takes the time to interact with the students and discuss what is expected of them. She sees students' potential and pushes them to be successful. And, by both direct instruction and example, she teaches other Kroger employees how to support the students in developing valuable job skills and making appropriate work choices.
