Georgia's unemployment rate rises in October
ATLANTA -- The Georgia Department of Labor reported today that the state's unemployment rate rose slightly to 4.7 percent in October, up one-tenth of one percent from 4.6 percent in September.
Georgia's unemployment rate increased, contrary to the national trend toward lower unemployment, primarily because of a large number of layoffs and a job growth rate that is not keeping up with the number of new job seekers. A total of 48,342 new job seekers entered the workforce, while newly-created non-farm jobs rose by only 17,600, a four-tenths percent increase.
The 14 metro areas of the state and their job changes from September to October include:
Albany, up 500, or eight-tenths percent, from 64,800 to 65,300. Athens, up 100, or one-tenth percent, from 81,700 to 81,800. Atlanta, up 9,900, or four-tenths percent, from 2,407,100 to 2,417,000. Augusta, up 600, or three-tenths percent, from 217,700 to 218,300. Brunswick, unchanged at 46,100. Columbus, up 100, or one-tenth percent, from 124,300 to 124,400. Dalton, up 200, or three-tenths percent, from 79,600 to 79,800. Gainesville, up 400, or six-tenths percent, from 71,800 to 72,200. Hinesville, up 100, or six-tenths percent, from 17,900 to 18,000.
