Georgia Department of Labor provides $36,000 for summer jobs in Middle Georgia
ATLANTA State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond announced today that the Georgia Department of Labor will provide $36,000 for the creation of 30 summer jobs for youth in the Middle Georgia area.
The funds are part of $1 million that the labor department will provide statewide for the creation of summer jobs for youth. The department is taking this action to respond to the worst job market for teenagers since World War II.
The initiative, which is in partnership with the state's 20 Workforce Investment Boards (WIBs), will provide jobs for 1,200 youth, most of whom already are on waiting lists across the state.
"These summer jobs will provide valuable work experience, plus wages for Georgia youth," said Thurmond. "Many young job seekers are having a difficult time finding work this summer because of the current tight job market. Without special efforts like this, many young Georgians face another long, restless, jobless summer."
Each youth will typically work 32 hours per week for six weeks. They will earn $5.15 per hour. A wide variety of jobs in both the public and private sector will be available for youth 14 through 21.
Summer jobs provide young people with an opportunity to gain valuable insights and work experience, enhancing their chances of long-term success in the workplace.
Youth interested in applying for one of these summer jobs should contact their local workforce investment board. In Baldwin, Crawford, Houston, Jones, Monroe, Peach, Pulaski, Putnam, Twiggs, and Wilkinson counties, contact the Middle Georgia Consortium at (478) 953-4771.
