Georgia's initial unemployment insurance claims rise
ATLANTA - The Georgia Department of Labor announced today that 36,708 laid-off workers filed first-time claims for unemployment insurance benefits in November. This represents an increase of 16.1 percent from October, when 31,607 claims were filed. Initial claims are considered to be a leading economic indicator, because they measure newly laid-off workers.
The seven metro areas of the state and their changes in initial unemployment insurance claims from October to November are as follows:
Albany, up 122, or 30 percent, from 412 to 534. Athens, up 216, or 55 percent, from 392 to 608. Atlanta, up 976, or 7.6 percent, from 12,864 to 13,840. Augusta, up five, or four-tenths percent, from 1,233 to 1,238. Columbus, up 1,000, or 128 percent, from 780 to 1,780. Macon, down 418, or 30 percent, from 1,411 to 993.
