Georgia unemployment claims increase dramatically
ATLANTA - The Georgia Department of Labor announced today that 59,206 laid-off workers filed a first-time claim for unemployment insurance benefits in December, an increase of 65 percent from November when 35,933 claims were filed. Initial claims are considered to be a leading economic indicator, because they measure newly laid-off workers.
"The huge increase in unemployment claims in December clearly sends the message that we continue to lose jobs in some areas of our state," said State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond. "Since the first of the year, such stalwart companies as Earthlink, WestPoint Stevens, Flint River Textiles, and Lord and Taylor have announced even more job cuts. These new losses not only affect workers whose jobs are being terminated, but make it even harder for Georgians who have been out of work for months to find employment. I continue to call on President Bush and Congress to extend unemployment insurance benefits to provide much-needed assistance for the long-term jobless."
Thurmond addressed Georgia lawmakers earlier this month and urged them to use their influence to encourage congressional support for an extension of unemployment benefits.
The seven metro areas of the state and their changes in initial unemployment insurance claims from November 2003 to December 2003 are as follows:
Albany, up 579, or 112 percent, from 515 to 1,094. Athens, up 476, or 100 percent, from 477 to 953. Atlanta, up 5,743, or 46 percent, from 12,525 to 18,268. Augusta, up 472, or 39 percent, from 1,197 to 1,669. Columbus, up 1,250, or 102 percent, from 1,222 to 2,472. Macon, up 592, or 60 percent, from 988 to 1,580. Savannah, up 1,029, or 130 percent, from 791 to 1,820.
