Middle Flint's employment increases, rate down in July

ATLANTA -- The Georgia Department of Labor reported today that the Middle Flint area experienced an increase in total employment from 40,725 in June to 41,100 in July, an increase of 375, which lowered the unemployment rate to 6.4 percent in July, down from 6.5 percent in June.

Meanwhile, the state experienced declines in jobs and the statewide unemployment rate last month. The state lost 16,600 jobs during July. In addition, Georgia's workforce declined from 4,419,040 in June to 4,403,023 in July, a drop of 16,017. The decline in the size of the workforce, in turn, lowered the state's unemployment rate to 5.2 percent, down from 5.4 percent in June.

"The July numbers suggest that the state's economy continues to sputter as it attempts to gain the traction needed for significant improvement in the job market," said State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond. "We need to be doing all we can to spur job creation and hiring now, and that means working with our existing businesses. They are the key to our recovery."

Job losses recorded in July have helped to push the number of jobless Georgians drawing unemployment insurance benefits to 100,335, an increase of 22 percent over June, when 82,278 drew benefits. The increase was driven largely by a surge in first-time claims for unemployment benefits. Last month, initial claims reached 63,023, an increase of 28.7 percent over the previous month.

Most of the July job loss came in the seasonal disappearance of maintenance and food service positions in public schools. Losses in building construction, wholesale trade, finance and insurance, professional, scientific and technical services, and food services and drinking places also contributed to the decline.
