UPS of Lagrange Wins Labor Department's Award of Excellence July 11, 2003
ATLANTA -- State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond announced today that the workforce of United Parcel Service (UPS) in LaGrange has earned the Georgia Department of Labor's Award of Excellence for workplace safety.
"Workplace safety is vitally important to the well-being of the individual worker and the employer," said Commissioner Thurmond. "A successful workplace safety program helps prevent the pain, suffering, and loss of life of employees. In addition, there are the economic benefits of lower medical and insurance costs and increased productivity. These awards are presented to recognize employers who have successful workplace safety programs and to encourage other employers to implement similar programs."
Jimmy Mize of the labor department's Safety Engineering Division in Atlanta presented the award on behalf of the commissioner during ceremonies held today in LaGrange.
The Award of Excellence recognizes companies that surpass the minimum 250 workdays with no lost-time injuries, illnesses or fatalities. A workday is considered to be an eight-hour period.
There are more than 194,000 employers in Georgia, representing almost all aspects of industry, service and trade. One way to keep Georgia's workforce healthy and productive is to provide safe and healthy environments.
