RWSIR VOLUNCHEERS PROGRAM WINS STATE AWARD
WARM SPRINGS -- The Georgia Department of Labor's Roosevelt Warm Springs Institute for Rehabilitation (RWSIR) Volunteer Services Division has received a 2002-2003 Georgia Society of Volunteer Services Excellence Award for its Voluncheers Program.
"You might say it's a public relations progress report," said RWSIR Volunteer Services Director Carol Barnes. "As a means of confidentiality, our voluncheers mail in their reports from each visit before the day is over, while it is still fresh on their minds. And, we compile this information for our Leadership Council and care-giver supervisors. As a report card, it's been very successful, and it's always good for our volunteers to hear glowing reports about our nurses, therapists, and everyone involved, as a means of reinforcing the job we are doing here."
Barnes accepted the award in the Community Outreach Division at the Georgia Society of Directors of Volunteer Services (GSDVS) annual education conference held recently at Lake Oconee in east central Georgia.
One day each month, a select group of volunteers from the Institute visit recently discharged patients within a 50mile radius of Warm Springs. The volunteers find out how the patients are progressing, get feedback about the patients' stay and treatment a the Roosevelt Institute, and maintain contact with them. The program has already had home visits with former patients in Columbus, LaGrange, Newnan, Griffin and Thomaston, as well as most of the smaller towns and communities in between.
