LOWER CHATTAHOOCHEE'S UNEMPLOYMENT RATE DECLINES TO 4.9 PERCENT IN JULY
ATLANTA --The Georgia Department of Labor announced today that the unemployment rate in the Lower Chattahoochee area declined three-tenths percent in July to 4.9 percent, down from 5.2 percent in June. The area's jobless rate was 6.1 percent in July of 2001.
Meanwhile, Georgia's unemployment rate declined three-tenths percent in July to 4.9 percent, down from 5.2 percent in June. The state's jobless rate was 4.3 percent in July of 2001.
"Although the decline in the unemployment rate is good news, it's primarily the result of employment trends," said State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond. "There are many local school employees who don't have 12-month contracts, such as maintenance and cafeteria workers and bus drivers, who don't attempt to find temporary summer employment. When school starts up again, most of these workers are expected to return to their regular jobs."
The area's rate declined in July because some textile and other manufacturing workers who were temporarily laid off in June returned to work.
During the same period, the state's workforce declined by nearly 12,000, while the number of jobs in Georgia also dropped from June to July by 33,300, or nine-tenths percent, to 3,863,800. The decline is largely because of the reduction in the number of people employed by educational systems.
