FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
METRO AUGUSTA'S UNEMPLOYMENT RATE RISES TO 4.6 PERCENT
ATLANTA -- The Georgia Department of Labor announced today that metro Augusta's unemployment rate rose one-tenth percent in February to 4.6 percent, up from 4.5 percent in January. The area's jobless rate was 4.2 percent in February 2001.
The rate went up in February because some jobs were lost in the construction industry and some workers in paper manufacturing were temporarily laid off.
Meanwhile, the state's unemployment rate remained unchanged at 4.4 percent from January to February, but it was up from 3.7 percent in February of 2001. A total of 14,600 new jobs were added in Georgia during February, the first time since last October that the state has had job growth. Non-farm jobs rose to 3,851,000 in February, up by four-tenths percent, from 3,836,400 in January.
"The report on job growth is yet another piece of good economic news that we have received in recent weeks," said State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond. "It follows a February decline in initial unemployment insurance claims. Taken together, these reports indicate an improving economy and the beginnings of a firming job market. However, this news must be viewed against a background of 180,000 jobless workers across the state. We are making every effort to get these people back to work. Clearly, we have a long way to go."
The job increases in February came in such manufacturing industries as transportation equipment, textiles, industrial machinery, and fabricated metals, as well as business services, temporary employment agencies, health and educational services, and engineering and management.
