FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
UNEMPLOYMENT RATE DECLINES IN NORTH GEORGIA AREA
ATLANTA --The Georgia Department of Labor announced today that the unemployment rate in the North Georgia area declined one-tenth percent in August to 3.5 percent, down from 3.6 percent in July. The area's jobless rate was 3.0 percent in August of 2000.
The decline in the rate was due largely to the return of about 1,600 temporary workers to nonwork activities, including high school and college. At the same time, some textile, apparel, and other manufacturing workers, who were temporarily off their jobs in July, returned to work in August.
Meanwhile, the state's unemployment rate declined two tenths of a percent in August to 3.8 percent, the same as in August of 2000. The decrease primarily resulted from the return of approximately 60,000 temporary workers to non-work activities, including high school and college.
"While we're glad to see a slight drop in the unemployment rate, the fact is labor market statistics for August are no longer relevant. The terrorists attacks on September 11 significantly altered the employment outlook nationally and here in Georgia," said State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond. "Although the airline and hospitality industries are expected to be among the hardest hit, many others are likely to suffer job losses as well.
"The Georgia Department of Labor is redoubling its efforts to assist workers affected by this crisis by processing their unemployment insurance claims helping them get back to work as soon as possible," the commissioner continued.
