JOHNSON NAMED AUGUSTA CAREER CENTER MANAGER
ATLANTA -- State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond said today that Beverly E. Johnson of Clarke County, a five-year veteran of the Georgia Department of Labor, has been named manager of the department's Augusta Career Center. Her appointment is effective Jan. 1.
An Athens native and graduate of Cedar Shoals High School in Clarke County, Johnson, 36, joined the labor department in 1993 in the Jobs for Georgia Graduates (JGG) unit as a job placement specialist. She then left the department and worked with the Athens Housing Authority as a drug elimination coordinator, where she was responsible for administering various grants. She then returned to the labor department and has served as the assistant manager of the Athens Career Center since last August.
A former public school teacher, Johnson holds a bachelor of science degree in business administration and management from Paine College in Augusta, and has attended the University of South Florida and Manatee Community College in Bradenton, Fla. Presently, she is pursuing a master's degree in public administration, with an emphasis in organizational development and leadership at the University of Georgia.
Johnson is a fellow with the University of Georgia Institute on Human Development and Disability, and also holds national certification as a public housing manager. She has held membership in the American Association of Public Administrators and is a lifetime member of the Girl Scouts USA. She has also served on the board of the Northeast Georgia Girl Scouts and the Clarke County School System Attendance Panel. She is also a noted motivational speaker and presenter, and has worked for the past four years with the Athens YWCO and Target stores to provide training for at-risk youth.

Johnson is a 1995 graduate of the Georgia Department of Labor's EXCEL leadership training program, and holds President's Awards from the Jobs for America's Graduates (JAG) program. She has been selected by Rotary International to travel to Japan as a member of the Rotary Foundation's Group Study Exchange program.
She is the daughter of Americus S. Johnson of Athens and the late Urias O. Johnson.
