UNEMPLOYMENT RATE IN MIDDLE FLINT AREA DECREASES
ATLANTA -- The Georgia Department of Labor announced today that the unemployment rate in the Middle Flint area decreased 2.7 percent in November to 5.7 percent, down from 8.4 percent in October. The area's jobless rate was 4.8 percent in November of 2000.
The decrease in the area rate from October to November was primarily due to the return to work of some workers in the manufacturing of food products who were temporarily laid off their jobs. A decline in the area's total civilian labor force also contributed to a drop in the jobless rate.
Meanwhile, Georgia's unemployment rate declined to 4.1 percent in November, down from 4.2 percent in October. The state's jobless rate was 3.2 percent in November of 2000.
The rate declined slightly in November because retailers hired about 7,500 temporary workers for the holiday season, mostly in shopping malls and grocery stores.
"While the slight dip in unemployment is good news, it's not an indication that the economy has turned around," said State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond. "The rate has dropped every November for the past quarter of a century because of the increase in temporary jobs during the Christmas holidays.
"The reality is we have a net loss of 80,000 jobs statewide in the past 12 months. More than 172,000 Georgians are unemployed and approximately 64,000 jobless workers have exhausted their unemployment benefits. The time has long passed for the President and Congress to produce an economic stimulus package that will provide help for these hard-working Georgians until they can go back to work," the commissioner continued.
