PHELPS DODGE WINS LABOR DEPARTMENT'S AWARD FOR WORKPLACE SAFETY
ATLANTA -- -- State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond said today that the Phelps Dodge Wire and Cable Co. in Trenton has been presented the Director's Award for its outstanding workplace safety program.
The Director's Award is one of the top 10 statewide awards presented annually by the Georgia Department of Labor that recognize outstanding achievement in preventing workplace injuries and illnesses.
"Each year, the labor department honors the achievements of Georgia employers in workplace safety," said Thurmond. "Our employers represent some of the best in recognizing the importance of safety and the impact it has on the health of our workers and the enterprises they serve. We all benefit from the efforts of employers to maintain a safe work environment. We congratulate Phelps Dodge on winning the Director' Award."
Earl Everett, director of the labor department's Safety Engineering Division, presented the award to Tony Wheeler, the company's behavior-based safety team facilitator, and production leader Joe Rimas, at the recent Georgia Safety, Health, and Environmental Conference in Savannah.
"Our goal is to eliminate occupational injuries and illnesses and to sustain that level of excellence," said Sharon Bice, the company's human resources manager. "Each employee must come to work every day prepared to exhibit the behavior necessary to sustain this goal. Key contributions to our success are employee involvement, behavioral changes, and the belief that 'zero' is not only attainable, but sustainable."
