INTERNATIONAL PAPER WINS LABOR DEPARTMENT'S COMMISSIONER'S AWARD FOR WORKPLACE SAFETY
ATLANTA -- -- State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond said today the International Paper Company's OSB Mill in Cordele has been presented the Commissioner's Award for its outstanding workplace safety program.
The Commissioner's Award is one of the top 10 statewide awards presented annually by the Georgia Department of Labor which recognize outstanding achievement in preventing workplace injuries and illnesses.
"Each year, the labor department honors the achievements of Georgia employers in workplace safety," said Thurmond. "Our employers represent some of the best in recognizing the importance of safety and the impact it has on the health of our workers and the enterprises they serve. We all benefit from the efforts of employers to maintain a safe work environment. We congratulate International Paper on winning the Commissioner's Award."
Earl Everett, director of the labor department's Safety Engineering Division, presented the award to Matt Whitman of Cordele, the company's environmental coordinator, at the recent Georgia Safety, Health, and Environmental Conference in Savannah.
"Without a doubt, the success of our safety program is due to an evident culture change, a seeded ideal that has been nurtured by commitment to the belief that all accidents are preventable," said Whitman. "We are proud of the success we have achieved in our safety program and the recognition it has afforded us, but mostly, thankful that the greatest measure of success and achievement is the safe health of our team members."
