COLUMBUS WATER WORKS WINS LABOR DEPARTMENT'S AWARD FOR WORKPLACE SAFETY
ATLANTA -- State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond said today that the Columbus Water Works in Muscogee County has been presented a Public Sector Award for its outstanding workplace safety program.
The Public Sector Award is one of the top 10 statewide awards presented annually by the Georgia Department of Labor that recognize outstanding achievement in preventing workplace injuries and illnesses.
"Each year, the labor department honors the achievements of Georgia employers in workplace safety," said Thurmond. "Our employers represent some of the best in recognizing the importance of safety and the impact it has on the health of our workers and the enterprises they serve. We all benefit from the efforts of employers to maintain a safe work environment. We congratulate the Columbus Water Works on winning a Public Sector Award."
Earl Everett, director of the labor department's Safety Engineering Division, presented the award to Michael Reed, the water works' safety/benefits manager, at the recent Georgia Safety, Health, and Environmental Conference in Savannah.
"We have experienced a trend of reductions in number and costs of on-the-job injuries in an industry that historically has experienced high incidence/accident rates," said Reed. "Recognizing the many business advantages that accompany such reductions, not the least of which is in the area of employee morale, a unique safety awards program was implemented, effective July 1, 1999.
