MORE GEORGIANS RELY ON UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS
ATLANTA -- The Georgia Department of Labor announced today that 92,298 Georgians drew unemployment insurance benefits in November. That total represents an increase in recipients of 80 percent over November of 2000 when 51,368 drew benefits. In October, 88,664 laid-off workers received benefits. In a related development, approximately 64,000 claimants have exhausted all benefits so far this year.
"These numbers clearly show that Congress must act quickly to approve an economic stimulus package with provisions that address the needs of our unemployed," said State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond. "Today, many more people are relying on unemployment insurance benefits and for longer periods of time. In addition, tens of thousands of Georgians have exhausted their benefits without finding a job. I repeat, Congress must act quickly to help these people and stimulate the economy."
While recipients may draw up to 26 weeks of unemployment benefits, the average recipient in Georgia drew benefits for 9.8 weeks in November, up from 8.8 weeks at this same time last year. The maximum weekly benefit amount is $284, while the average check is $226.
Unemployment insurance claims that have been filed in the past year have come across the board in manufacturing, construction, trade and other services.
In November, 61,649 Georgians filed first-time claims for unemployment insurance benefits, up 19,748, or 47 percent, from November of last year. The seven metro areas of the state and their changes in initial claims over the past 12 months are as follows:
q Albany, up 105, or 18 percent, from 592 to 697.
