FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
GEORGIA DEPARTMENT OF LABOR TO HOST DIALOGUE ON POVERTY IN METRO-ATLANTA
ATLANTA - State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond said today that The Georgia Department of Labor will host the Metro-Atlanta Dialogue on Poverty on May 9 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The forum is part of a nationwide effort called Dialogue 2000: Leading America to Community Action.
The program is coordinated by the Fulton-Atlanta Community Action Authority. It will be held in the Allen Hardin Amphitheater ("C" Level) of the Loudermilk Center, located at 40 Courtland Street, N.E., in downtown Atlanta.
"It is important to support this national discussion about poverty in America today," said Thurmond. "This forum provides an opportunity for all segments of our community to come together to talk about poverty in metro Atlanta and how we can develop strategies to help people in our own communities become self-sufficient. With current unemployment at an historic low level and jobs being created faster than they can be filled, now is the time to act."
The Dialogue will bring together people from throughout the community to discuss jobs, health care, welfare, childcare, and other poverty-related issues. Discussions will include the social and economic dynamics that lead to poverty, as well as the impact of poverty on individuals, families, and communities. The information gathered during the forum will be used to help determine the needs of metro Atlanta, better inform the general public and government officials, and develop strategies to better serve low-income individuals and families.
The forum is one of hundreds of similar discussions sponsored nationwide by the National Association of Community Action Agencies (NACAA). Reports from those forums will be used
