FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SUMMER INTERNSHIPS AVAILABLE AT STATE LABOR DEPARTMENT

ATLANTA -- State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond said today that the Georgia Department of Labor will conduct its Summer Internship Program again this year, with internships available for up to 70 students. The internship program, which was initiated last year, is designed to provide students at colleges and technical institutes with practical work experience, an opportunity to earn school credit, and a chance to make up to $1,920 this summer.

"The internships, which were highly successful last summer, provide students with invaluable experience in a real work environment," said Thurmond. "Interns work with staff members in our labor department offices all over the state, and emphasis is placed on complementing the students' classroom learning with professional work experience."

The interns will work 30 hours per week for eight weeks between June 12 and Aug. 4, and they will be paid bi-monthly. The program is open to any student presently enrolled in, or accepted to, a college, university, or technical institute in the state, or to a Georgia resident enrolled in, or accepted to, a similar school in another state. School credits may be earned, but interns are responsible for making arrangements with their respective institutions to obtain the credit. Interns will be selected on the basis of their interests, areas of expertise that will be enhanced by their work with the labor department, their maturity level, and their access to one of the department's 53 offices around the state and the central office in downtown Atlanta. Whenever possible, the selected interns will be allowed to choose the office where they will work.

Each applicant must complete an application and job interview conducted by a member of the department's staff. Applications are available at any office of the Georgia Department of Labor, on the department's Web site at www.dol.state.ga.us, or by writing to Joe Larche, assistant to the commissioner, Georgia Department of Labor, Suite 600, 148 International Blvd., N. E., Atlanta,
