MIDDLE FLINT'S UNEMPLOYMENT RATE DOWN IN JANUARY
ATLANTA -- State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond said today that Middle Flint's January unemployment rate declined to 4.7 percent, down from 4.9 percent in December. The area's jobless rate was 6.6 percent in January 1999.
The decline in the rate is due to a decrease in the number of people in the labor force. The labor force declines each January, primarily because of two reasons. Students who held part-time retail and service-related jobs during the holidays return to school and some people who work outdoors are unable to do so because of the winter weather.
"We continue to have a tight labor market among skilled workers in the Middle Flint area," said Thurmond. "There are simply not enough skilled workers to meet increasing demand. Even though our labor force has grown, the increase in available workers is not keeping pace with job growth. Many of the new skilled jobs are being filled by people moving into the state.
"Although skilled labor moving here from other areas will continue to help us meet the demand, I believe development of our own 'indigenous workforce' must be given a higher priority," Thurmond continued. "We cannot overlook the potential of segments of our existing population, such as senior citizens, persons with disabilities, and former welfare recipients. Eliminating barriers to employment that these groups face is critical to meeting the growing need for qualified employees."
Georgia's unemployment rate was 3.3 percent in January, unchanged from December. The state's jobless rate was 3.8 percent in January 1999.
Labor market data are now available on the Georgia Department of Labor's Web site at www.dol.
