FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

WIA SEMINAR SET FOR WEDNESDAY, FEB. 9, IN BAINBRIDGE

ATLANTA -- The Georgia Department of Labor's Bainbridge office, the Southwest Georgia Employer Committee, and the Georgia Works Connection will sponsor a luncheon-seminar for employers and others on the implementation of the federal Workforce Investment Act (WIA) of 1998. WIA, which becomes effective July 1, will provide funds for educating and training workers in the area.

The seminar, entitled "Making It Work for Southwest Georgia," is set for Wednesday, Feb. 9, at noon at the Charter House Inn off Highway 27 South in Bainbridge. Cost is $10 a person. The seminar is designed for employers, employees, local elected officials, and others to study the creation of a new workforce development system for southwest Georgia.

The seminar will focus on the roles many diverse groups will play in the development of a workforce investment system. These groups include employers and chief elected officials, veterans, youth, migrant and seasonal farm workers, people with disabilities, and those who could benefit from adult education and literacy programs.

The seminar will be conducted by Ms. Sylvia Elam of Atlanta, a program director in the Georgia Department of Labor's headquarters office. For more than 25 years, Ms. Elam worked for the Georgia Department of Family and Children's Services (DFACS). Last year, she joined the staff of the labor department, where she currently heads up an in-house design team, consisting of senior managers responsible for preparing the labor department for the implementation of WIA.

For more information about the seminar, contact the labor department's office in Bainbridge at (912) 248-2618.
