LABOR DEPARTMENT KICKS OFF BLACK HISTORY MONTH CELEBRATION
ATLANTA -- State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond officially kicked off the Georgia Department of Labor's eighth annual celebration of Black History Month in opening ceremonies at the department's headquarters in Sussex Place at 148 International Blvd. in Atlanta.
In welcoming guests to the ceremonies, Commissioner Thurmond said, "The labor department is the only state agency that officially celebrates Black History Month with month-long activities. The theme of this year's celebration is, 'Heritage and Horizons: The African-American Legacy and the Challenges of the 21st Century.' "
Morris Brown College, a predominately African-American institution at the Atlanta University Center, was featured at the department's opening ceremonies. The college's jazz band performed, and Dr. Dolores Cross, president of the college, spoke on the progress that African-Americans have made in education. Dr. Cross told how her grandmother had inspired her to learn to read and write well and to set personal goals and work hard to achieve them. A marathon runner herself, Dr. Cross also challenged individuals to "go the distance" in their own personal development and relationships with others.
Other activities scheduled during the month include an African-American exhibit in the lobby of the department's headquarters, a book fair, essay writing and public speaking competition for students, and performances by the Atlanta University dance choir, the Douglass High School chorus, and the Phi Mu Alpha fraternity and Sister sorority.
The culmination of the month-long activities will be held Thursday, Feb. 24, from 8-9 a.m. at the Sheraton Atlanta Hotel at 165 Courtland St. in downtown Atlanta. At that time, the department's Humanitarian and Distinguished Service awards will be presented, Black History Month honorees
