LABOR DEPARTMENT TO REPLACE MISSING UNEMPLOYMENT CHECKS

ATLANTA -- The Georgia Department of Labor said today that no one will lose money as a result of having their weekly unemployment insurance benefit checks not delivered by the postal service.

On Tuesday, Sept. 21, the labor department delivered approximately 19,000 checks to the Garnett Station post office in Atlanta, of which 5,173 checks are presently unaccounted for. The department has documentation that the checks were received by the post office.

The checks in question, which were mailed to claimants who live near Atlanta in zip codes beginning with 300 and 301, would have normally been received within two to three days. But, when claimants began calling the labor department and post office Friday asking why their checks had not been delivered, officials from both agencies began the tracing process.

The labor department is now determining exactly which checks are included in the affected zip codes and should have the answer by the end of today. Department staff will follow up to ensure that the checks have not been cashed or delivered and will promptly issue replacement checks.

Claimants who would like to request an immediate replacement check may do so by calling the labor department office where they filed their claim. The replacement check will be available for pick up at the local office by noon of the following day. The average weekly amount of an unemployment insurance check in Georgia is $194.

Meanwhile, the department is in the process of implementing a two-step system that will eliminate the possibility of lost or late mail delivery of unemployment insurance checks.

Georgia Department of Labor - Press Release
"Next Friday, we will begin paying unemployment insurance benefits through direct deposit for claimants who request it," said State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond. "To receive direct deposit, claimants should take a voided check to their local labor department office and request it. And in the coming months, we will also implement Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) cards for those claimants who don't have checking accounts, or who choose not to use direct deposit."

Once the EBT cards are implemented, paper checks will no longer be issued.
