GEORGIA'S 3.9 PERCENT JOBLESS RATE LOWEST FOR AUGUST IN 26 YEARS

ATLANTA -- State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond said today that Georgia's 3.9 percent unemployment rate in August was the lowest recorded for that month in 26 years. The rate was down from 4.1 percent in July and 4.2 percent in August 1998.

"As a result of low unemployment, many areas of the state are experiencing severe shortages of skilled labor," Thurmond said. "The current labor shortages around the state have opened the doors to employment for thousands of 'non-traditional' workers, such as senior citizens, persons with disabilities, former welfare recipients, immigrants and rehabilitated ex-offenders.

"All of these diverse groups are adding their skills and talents to a workforce that is straining to meet the ever-growing demand for qualified employees. And while some companies that move to Georgia may bring their own employees with them, an important part of our workforce development strategy is the upgrading of the skills and training of our 'indigenous workforce' -those who already live here."

During the past year, nonfarm jobs have increased to 3,868,100, up 111,100, a growth rate of 3.0 percent. In July, 24,700 new jobs were added, with most of those at shopping malls, restaurants
and bars, temporary employment agencies, day care centers for children, and some among truckers and warehouse workers.

Only metro Athens, where jobs declined from 74,200 to 74,100, failed to add new jobs during the past 12 months. The other metro areas and their percentage of jobs increases from August 1998 to August 1999 are as follows:

-- Albany, 59,100, up 200, or three-tenths percent.
