August 27, 1999 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE SAFETY INSPECTIONS OF CARNIVAL RIDES UNDERWAY BY STATE LABOR DEPARTMENT
ATLANTA -- State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond said today that the Georgia Department of Labor's annual safety inspections of amusement park and carnival rides are underway across the state in preparation for the up-coming Fall season, but the commissioner also stressed that the riding public has some responsibility for its own safety.
"Many people throughout the state either visit an amusement park or take in a carnival that comes to their home town during the year," said Thurmond. "There are certain proven safety practices they should follow, and if they do, they should have a safe and fun outing."
The safety rules recommended by the Georgia Department of Labor are as follows:
1. Remain seated in the ride at all times.
2. Use the safety devices, such as seat belts, provided.
3. Follow all safety instructions.
4. Always supervise small children.
5. Walk, don't run on ride platforms.
6. Remain behind protective fencing.
