FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE U.I. RECIPIENTS INCREASE BY 4,450 IN JUNE
ATLANTA -- State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond said today that the number of people in Georgia drawing unemployment insurance benefits rose by 4,450 from May to June.
The rise in jobless claims was due mostly to seasonal workers at day care centers and private educational institutions being temporarily laid off for the summer.
In June, 38,632 people drew $24,751,886 in jobless benefits, up from 34,185 who drew $19,309,770 in May. In June, 1998, 35,592 drew $20,491,972. The maximum weekly unemployment insurance benefit rose to $264 on July 1, up from $244 in June. It will rise to $274 on July 1, 2000, and $284 on July 1, 2001. The increase on July 1 ranked Georgia fifth in the Southeast and 39th nationally in weekly benefit payments.
The number of people filing claims for unemployment insurance benefits in the state's major metropolitan areas from May to June is as follows:
-- Albany, claims down by 46 from 616 to 570.
-- Athens, claims up by 45 from 377 to 422.
-- Atlanta, claims up by 121 from 10,851 to 10,972.
-- Augusta, claims up by 288 from 936 to 1,224.
-- Columbus, claims up by 98 from 725 to 823.
