JGG PROGRAM TO BE EXPANDED TO DALTON HIGH SCHOOL

ATLANTA -- State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond said today that a highly-successful school-to-work transition program for at-risk students will be expanded to Dalton High School this fall, bringing the statewide total to 25 high schools. The program -- Jobs for Georgia Graduates (JGG)-- is a state affiliate of the national model, Jobs for America's Graduates (JAG).

In addition to Dalton High, JGG will be expanded during the 1999-2000 school year to include Oglethorpe County High in Lexington, Elbert County High in Elberton, Cross Creek High in Augusta, Turner County High in Ashburn, Marietta High in Cobb County, and Lowndes County and Valdosta High in Lowndes County. About 1,000 students are expected to participate in the program statewide this year. Since its beginning in 1987, the program has served about 7,000 students in 17 high schools.

"JGG is an important piece of my plan to develop a world-class workforce in Georgia," Thurmond said. "It's one of the most valuable programs available to help our young people begin successful, productive and rewarding lives, because it's already been proven successful in bringing at-risk high school students into the workplace or military, and encouraging them to continue their education after high school."

Each year, about 45 students are selected to participate in the program from each of the high schools. Job specialists are located on-site and work directly with the students during the 18month program. The students are taught job skills, receive counseling on career development and work ethics, assisted in finding a job and given follow-up services.

High schools where the JGG program has been offered are Dougherty Comprehensive High and Albany High, Albany; Cedar Shoals High and Clarke Central High, Athens; North Springs High,
