FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

"NEW-HIRE" REPORTING SEMINAR TO BE HELD JULY 23 IN KINGSLAND

ATLANTA -- State Labor Commissioner Michael L. Thurmond said today that the Georgia Department of Labor, along with the King's Bay Employer Committee, will host a seminar on a new amendment to Georgia's New Hire law in Kingsland this month.

The seminar, set for July 23, from 9:00 a.m. until noon, will be held in the Camden County Annex Building on the corner of Gross Road and Highway 40.

This amendment requires all employers doing business with the state to report every newly-hired employee to the state. By doing so, they assist state governments in locating those who are delinquent with child support payments so that authorities can initiate legal steps to have the support payments withheld from their earnings. According to the Georgia Department of Administrative Services, which administers the New Hire Program on behalf of the state Department of Human Resources, this has proved to be the most efficient way of collecting child support to date. The law will help prevent welfare fraud and lower the nation's welfare rate, while also reducing the number of children needing financial assistance.

In addition, the Georgia Department of Labor will use the provided information to verify the status of those applying for and receiving unemployment insurance claims. This is also an efficient means of preventing unemployment insurance fraud.

Ms. Laura Whitfield, project manager with the Georgia New Hire Reporting Center in Atlanta, will present an overview of the "New Hire Reporting Program." This valuable seminar will include background information on employer responsibilities and reporting requirements, and will provide information packages and required forms.
