U.I. RECIPIENTS INCREASE BY 2,650 IN NOVEMBER
ATLANTA -- State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond said today that the number of people in Georgia drawing unemployment insurance benefits increased by 2,650 from October to November.
The increase in jobless claims came mostly in apparel and other manufacturing industries. The apparel industry has lost 3,500 manufacturing jobs in the past year.
In November, 38,202 people drew $25,783,604 in jobless benefits, up from 35,551 who drew $21,202,263 in October. In November 1998, 36,852 drew $18,725,270. The maximum weekly unemployment insurance benefit is $264.
The number of people filing claims for unemployment insurance benefits in the state's major metropolitan areas from October to November is as follows:
-- Albany, claims down by 58 from 586 to 528.
-- Athens, claims down by 19 from 355 to 336.
-- Atlanta, claims up by 13 from 11,746 to 11,759.
-- Augusta, claims down by 20 from 1,077 to 1,057.
-- Columbus, claims up by 29 from 861 to 890.
