FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

STATE LABOR DEPARTMENT IS Y2K COMPLIANT

ATLANTA -- State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond said today that all of the Georgia Department of Labor systems have been upgraded and tested for Y2K compliance.

The department does not expect any delays in providing services or conducting business, because of Y2K issues, including issuing unemployment insurance checks and handling employer tax accounts. While no one can guarantee there will be no problems, the Georgia Department of Labor has done everything possible to ensure readiness.

The department's unemployment insurance division has been using a Y2K compliant system throughout this year.

Although all systems have been tested and meet compliancy standards, the labor department has developed contingency plans for any emergencies related to Y2K. Techcnical staff and management will be on duty throughout New Years Eve and New Year's Day to ensure a smooth transition into the year 2000.

NEWS MEDIA NEEDING ADDITIONAL INFORMATION SHOULD CALL THE GEORGIA DEPARTMENT OF LABOR'S OFFICE OF COMMUNICATIONS AT (404) 656-3032.
