VIRGINIA HARRIS TO CHAIR ADVISORY BOARD FOR GEORGIA YOUTH

ATLANTA -- State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond has named Virginia W. Harris of Gwinnett County to chair a newly-created advisory board for the Georgia Department of Labor's Youth Motivational Task Force (YMTF). The purpose of the advisory board is to expand efforts to engage the state's business, community, and civic leaders in establishing and maintaining successful career planning programs. Ms. Harris currently serves as director of internal audits for the Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners.

"For the past seven years, our youth motivational program has helped thousands of our young people successfully prepare for life after high school," Thurmond said. "This is a program that has proved its worth. It should be expanded and diversified to better serve all of Georgia's youth as they prepare for their careers. This new advisory board, led by Virginia Harris, will focus on ways to extend the program to elementary, middle and high schools, vocational and technical institutes, and colleges and universities across the state."

Ms. Harris chairs the YMTF program at Albany State University, where she holds degrees in business administration and accounting. She also hold a master's degree in public administration from Tulane University. In 1998, she received the Gwinnett Community Council and United Way Community Leader Award for volunteerism. She was named an "Outstanding Georgia Citizen" in 1997. Ms. Harris is also active in the National Urban League's Executive Exchange Program.
