FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

METRO ATHENS' JOBLESS RATE DECLINES TO 2.4 PERCENT IN OCTOBER

ATLANTA -- State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond said today that the unemployment rate in metro Athens declined to 2.4 percent in October, down from 2.5 percent in September. The area's jobless rate was 2.8 percent in October 1998.

The unemployment rate declined during the month because some new jobs were added at the University of Georgia.

"I am pleased that the unemployment rate is down in the Athens area," Thurmond said. "But, the northeast Georgia area, as well as other parts of the state, face a serious shortage of skilled workers. This situation creates the ideal opportunity to launch a new job training system for our state. On Dec. 9-10, we will host the statewide Georgia Workforce Conference in Atlanta, bringing together highly-respected leaders from business, education and government, including Gov. Roy Barnes, to discuss the development of a world-class workforce."

The focus of the conference will be the implementation of the Workforce Investment Act of 1998. Activation of this landmark legislation will shift responsibility for workforce training from the federal to the state and local levels. A highlight of the conference will be the unveiling of the Georgia Department of Labor's Workforce Center, which will showcase the new system of delivering a full-range of customer-focused services at the local level.

The Georgia Workforce Conference is set for Thursday and Friday, Dec. 9-10, at the World Congress Center in Atlanta. Information about the conference is available from the labor department's website at www.dol.state.ga.us, or by calling Cathy Bexley at (404) 656-3050.

During the past year, jobs in metro Athens have increased to 75,700, up 1,700, a growth rate of

2.3 percent. Statewide, Georgia has added 132,500 new jobs in the past year, for a growth rate of 3.5 percent, and the 3.7 percent unemployment rate for the state in October was the lowest ever recorded for that month.
