STATEWIDE PUBLIC FORUM SET FOR POSSIBLE MERGER OF GEORGIA'S DEPARTMENT OF LABOR AND DIVISION OF REHABILITATION SERVICES

ATLANTA -- State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond and Audrey Horne, commissioner of the state's Department of Human Resources, will host a statewide public forum via teleconference next week to discuss the possible merger of The Georgia Division of Rehabilitation Services with the Georgia Department of Labor. Presently, the Division of Rehabilitation Services is part of the Georgia Department of Human Resources.

"As we approach the new millennium and prepare to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), we are renewing our commitment to open doors of opportunity to all Georgia citizens, especially those with disabilities," the commissioners said in a prepared statement. "This forum is being held because everyone's input is important, and the participation of consumers, advocates and other stakeholders in this process is vital to the outcome."

The public forum will be held Tuesday, Nov. 23, from 10 a.m. until noon in the studios of Georgia Public Television (GPTV), 260 14th Street, NW, Atlanta, where the teleconference will originate. The public can also attend the forum at facilities in six other locations throughout the state where it will be down-linked.

Downlink sites for the public forum will be in Room 416 of the Continuing Education Center at Bainbridge College in Bainbridge; the Cherokee Room of the Westcott Building at Dalton College in Dalton; Room 111 of the Coastal Georgia Center in Savannah; Room Q of the Georgia Center for Continuing Education in Athens; Room 600 of the Library Building at Columbus Tech in Columbus; and Macon Tech's satellite campus in Milledgeville.
